TWELVE

DAZE

I don’t dwell on shit. Not like the way Ben does or Chris, pining away for the glory days and living with one foot always in the past. I don’t second-guess myself, either. In a world where a bullet could end your life any minute, there’s no fucking time to hesitate.

But I’m hesitating now. Every ounce of me wants to turn back, strolling into that church and throwing Frey over my shoulder if I have to. She thinks she’s brave for looking into what happened to her brother. She is. But bravery doesn’t always outweigh stupidity, and she’s too naïve to sense the undercurrent of bullshit brewing that I can. Something big is about to go down.

And if I don’t get her out soon, she’ll be destroyed in the aftermath.

But before I can even think about getting her away from Heywood, I need to solve the tiny problem of finding a place to hole up and defend.

When I return to the bar. Ben is there, leaning against the counter, his arms crossed, gaze questioning. “You look like you just got punched in the stomach,” he says. “Don’t tell me you ran into Silas again, already?”

“No,” I say—though that’s another thing to worry about. Why hasn’t he come by to rub my nose in the mess he’s created? If I wanted to be smug about it, I’d claim the bastard was too chicken shit to face me, but that’s not it. Whatever trouble I sense on the horizon, Silas is no doubt behind it.

“I’ve been thinking about this plan of yours,” I add. “It still sounds crazy as hell, but we don’t exactly have other options.”

“I had a feeling you’d say that,” Ben says with a smile. “That’s why I went ahead and made the arrangements while you were out. As I said before, it isn’t anything too risky. It’s just going to take…balls.”

“Something tells me you aren’t talking in the literal sense.”

With a wink, Ben grabs his jacket from a table in the corner and heads for the door. “I’ll explain on the way there. This is going to work, Day, and if it doesn’t? Well, it’s not like we’ll have much time to dwell on that with bullets in our skulls, right?”

I don’t laugh at the joke.

As things stand, taking a bullet is well worth the risk if it means getting Frey out of that house a second sooner. Dwelling on the past can’t help shit, but my mind keeps replaying those last minutes with her over and over. Fuck, I can still taste her on the tip of my tongue.

I can’t shake the feeling that, if I don’t act soon, that might be the last of her I’ll ever have.
